What Is A Facelift?

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, replaces signs of aging with smoother skin and a refreshed appearance. The procedure works by elevating sagging skin while repositioning the underlying muscles and soft tissues. Dr. Parakh is known for her naturalistic results and meticulous attention to detail for each facelift. Your elegant, nuanced changes will inspire newfound confidence and security.

What Causes Facial Aging?

Facial aging happens gradually and affects more than just the skin. Over time, collagen and elastin production decrease, causing the skin to lose firmness and elasticity. At the same time, facial fat shifts downward due to gravity, leading to jowls, deeper folds around the mouth, and loss of jawline definition.

Beneath the skin, the SMAS layer (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) also relaxes. This deeper structural change contributes significantly to sagging in the lower face and neck. Because aging affects both the surface and the underlying support system, effective rejuvenation often requires lifting and repositioning these deeper tissues, not simply tightening the skin.

Environmental factors such as sun exposure and lifestyle habits can further accelerate visible aging.

By addressing these structural changes, a facelift restores natural contour and definition while preserving your unique facial expression.

What a Facelift Can Improve

While a facelift cannot stop the aging process altogether, it can reverse some of the visual signs of aging, helping you look like a more youthful version of yourself that better reflects the vitality you feel on the inside. During your facelift in New Jersey, the tissue of the neck and face is redraped, facial fat is redistributed, and the skin structure is tightened. Surgery can address:

  • Deep lines and wrinkles
  • Creases and bands
  • Sagging skin
  • Lost volume
  • Hollow-looking cheeks
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Jowls
  • Loss of definition in the jawline
  • Submental fullness

Signs You May Be Ready for a Facelift

Facial aging develops gradually, but certain changes may indicate that surgical rejuvenation could provide more effective and lasting improvement than non-surgical treatments.

You may be ready for a facelift if you notice:

  • Sagging along the jawline
Loss of definition and the formation of jowls can make the lower face appear heavier or less structured.
  • Deep folds around the mouth
Pronounced nasolabial folds or marionette lines that no longer respond well to fillers may signal deeper tissue descent.
  • Loose skin in the neck
Skin laxity, banding, or fullness beneath the chin can contribute to an aged or tired appearance.
  • Fillers or skin treatments are no longer giving the results you want
While injectables and skincare can address early signs of aging, they cannot reposition deeper facial structures once significant sagging has occurred.

Healthy adults with moderate to advanced skin laxity in the lower face and neck are often strong candidates for a facelift. During your consultation, Dr. Shwetambara Parakh will evaluate your facial anatomy and discuss whether a surgical approach is appropriate for your goals.

How Your Facelift Is Performed

A facelift takes between 4-5 hours to complete and will be performed under general anesthesia for your complete comfort. During the procedure, Dr. Parakh will make careful incisions along the hairline and the natural crease in front of the ear and behind the ear to hide the scars. These incisions enable her to lift and reposition your facial muscles and tissues to a more desired location.

Once the deep sculpting is completed, the excess skin is trimmed away, and meticulous closure is performed. Drains will be placed for 24-48 hrs to allow quicker resolution of swelling.

Dr. Parakh is a perfectionist whose meticulous attention to detail achieves a nuanced, lasting transformation.

Dr. Parakh’s SMAS Facelift Technique

Dr. Shwetambara Parakh performs a SMAS facelift to address the deeper structural changes responsible for sagging in the lower face and neck. The SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) is the supportive layer beneath the skin that weakens over time, contributing to jowls, loss of jawline definition, and facial descent.

Rather than tightening the skin alone, Dr. Parakh repositions and secures the SMAS layer to restore natural contour and support. By addressing these deeper tissues, the procedure creates longer-lasting results and reduces tension on the skin, which helps minimize visible scarring and maintain a natural appearance.

Each facelift is customized based on your anatomy, degree of skin laxity, and aesthetic goals. Dr. Parakh carefully refines the lower two-thirds of the face while preserving your natural facial expression and proportions. The goal is not to change how you look, but to restore structure and definition in a way that appears balanced and refreshed.

This deeper structural approach allows for meaningful rejuvenation while maintaining subtle, elegant results.

Combine a Facelift with Other Procedures

A facelift restores definition to the lower face and jawline, but many patients choose to combine it with additional procedures for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Addressing the face as a whole often creates more balanced, natural-looking results.

Facelift and Neck Lift

A neck lift is commonly performed with a facelift to tighten loose skin and improve contour beneath the chin. Combining a facelift and neck lift enhances jawline definition and creates a smooth transition from the face to the neck.

Facelift and Fat Grafting

Facial aging often includes volume loss in the cheeks and midface. Fat grafting restores natural fullness using your own tissue. When paired with a facelift, it improves contour and softens hollow areas while maintaining a refined appearance.

Facelift and Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can reduce sagging upper lids or under-eye puffiness. Combining a facelift with blepharoplasty rejuvenates both the upper and lower face for a refreshed, well-rested look.

During your consultation, Dr. Shwetambara Parakh will determine whether combining procedures is appropriate based on your anatomy and goals. Each surgical plan is customized to achieve balanced, long-lasting results.

Recovery Timeline

Following your facelift in New Jersey, you will stay overnight in the hospital so that Dr. Parakh can evaluate you the following day. If you must go home, you will need a private duty nurse. The next day, your drains will be removed, and you will be provided with bandages and a facial strap. You will need to wear these for 1-2 weeks as your results emerge. Most patients recover within two weeks, and return to work at three weeks.

The majority of swelling should dissipate within two weeks of your facelift, while minor numbness can persist for a period of time, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. You will need to avoid heavy lifting for about two weeks. We will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions and will also schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that your recovery is progressing optimally.

Caring for Drains After a Facelift

Following your facelift procedure, small surgical drains may be placed to prevent fluid buildup and promote proper healing. These drains are typically thin, flexible tubes connected to a small bulb that collects fluid from beneath the skin.

Here’s how to care for them at home:

  • Empty the drain bulb 2–3 times a day or as instructed by your surgical team. Record the amount and color of fluid to help monitor healing.
  • Keep the area clean and dry. Gently clean around the drain site with mild soap and water or saline if directed, and pat dry.
  • Secure the drain properly to prevent accidental pulling or tension. Clip it to your clothing with a safety pin or use provided supports.
  • Do not try to remove or reposition the drains on your own. They will be removed during a follow-up appointment, usually within 3–5 days.

It’s normal to see some pink-tinged fluid early on. However, notify your provider if the fluid becomes bright red, foul-smelling, or increases suddenly. Following these steps supports a smooth recovery and helps reduce swelling and bruising.

What is the best age to get a facelift?

There is no single right age for a facelift. Most patients consider surgery between their mid-40s and early 60s, when sagging in the jawline and neck becomes more noticeable. The ideal timing depends on your skin quality, facial anatomy, and degree of tissue laxity. Earlier intervention can often produce more subtle, natural-looking results.

How long do facelift results last?

Facelift results typically last 10 to 15 years. While the procedure repositions deeper facial structures and removes excess skin, it does not stop the natural aging process. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and protecting your skin from sun exposure can help prolong your results.

Will I look natural after a facelift?

A common concern is looking overdone or pulled. When the deeper SMAS layer is repositioned and tension is placed on the underlying structures rather than the skin, results appear natural and balanced. The goal is to restore definition to the lower face and neck while preserving your natural expression.

Are facelift scars visible?

Facelift incisions are carefully placed along the hairline and natural creases around the ears to keep them discreet. As healing progresses, scars typically fade and become difficult to detect. Proper aftercare and sun protection support optimal healing.

How long is recovery after a facelift?

Most patients experience swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. Many return to non-strenuous work within 2 to 3 weeks. Residual swelling continues to improve over several weeks, with final results gradually refining over the following months.

Is a facelift painful?

Discomfort after a facelift is usually described as tightness or soreness rather than sharp pain. Medication is prescribed to keep you comfortable during the early recovery period. Most patients find recovery manageable with proper care and rest.

When do fillers stop being enough?

Injectables can improve early volume loss but cannot lift sagging skin or reposition deeper facial tissues. If fillers no longer provide meaningful improvement to the jawline or neck, a facelift may offer more effective and longer-lasting rejuvenation.
